Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty

Argon laser trabeculoplasty is a outpatient treatment for people with open-angle glaucoma. The laser is used to make a series of tiny burns on the part of the eye that controls how the fluid leaks out from the front part of the eye into the blood stream. The laser treatment opens up drainage channels in and allows more fluid to leak out. Some people respond very well, and, unfortunately, some do not respond at all to the treatment. Currently, there is no way to predict who will respond well. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes to perform the treatment. Drops will be put into your eye to make the pupil small and also numb the eye. After the procedure is complete you may be given anti-inflammatory drops to use for a week or two after the treatment. These drops and how to use them will be explained to you at the time. Furthermore, you will normally be advised to continue your normal glaucoma eye drops. If the treatment is successful it should reduce the pressure in the eye. This reduction in pressure will help to slow the progression of glaucoma and therefore help preserve peripheral vision. The effect of the treatment can take up to a year to develop and wears off after 3-5 years. It can be repeated once in each eye.
